I WANT WHAT THEY'RE WEARING | The Great

Updated: May 28, 2023

If you have not partaken of the deliciously dark delicacy that is The Great on Hulu, might I entice you to start watching immediately. I find dark humor to be the penultimate form of entertainment so this show already had me at its base concept. But the makeup design was absolutely dreamy while remaining historically accurate, until it’s not. But that’s the fun of the show!

The Great

Head Hair and Makeup Designer, Louise Coles was behind the brilliant makeup choices and wig creation. The decadence of this era already draws people in so it’s fun to see where they decided to stay true to the time and when they chose to diverge and bring some modernity into the show.

Makeup Artist Erin Ayanian Monroe was in charge of applying Catherine’s (played by Elle Fanning) varying looks. Worth mentioning that she also does Elle Fanning’s makeup for a lot of events and just recently created one of my favorite makeup looks on Elle for the Met Gala. I digress.

In addition to using Chantecaille as a base, MAC shadows and Tatcha skincare, she relied heavily on Glossier as the mainstay for most looks. The Glossier Cloud Paints were the Hero product because of their gel-like consistency that left a stain on the cheeks and lips.

Other Glossier products were the Stretch Concealer and the Boy Brow gel. This era of Marie Antionette is one of my favorite’s to research historically speaking regarding cosmetics, so to bring this historical makeup to life with a modern twist is a dream.

Products Used:

Tatcha Dew Moisturizer

Glossier Stretch Concealer

Glossier Cloud Paint in Storm

MAC lip liner in Nightmoth topped with Patrick Ta lip balm

MAC eyeshadow in Malt

Glossier Boy Brow Gel in clear

Lancome Mascara in Brown

Jones Road Beauty Miracle Balm in Natural (used sparingly and with purpose)

Pro Tips

Keep depth of color to one place when doing this type of look. If you want the lips to have that bruised soft goth color, then keep the lashes brows and eyes as natural as possible.
